A prescription medicine (Rx) is a licensed medicine that is regulated by legislation to require a prescription (in which the medicine and/or active ingredient that must be given to a patient is established, as well as the rules for a correct administration ) from a physician before it can be obtained. The term is used to distinguish it from over the counter medicines which can be obtained without a prescription.
